Privacy Policy

Overview
KnowYard is built on a simple principle: collect only what we need to run the platform, and be transparent about what that is. We do not sell your data. We do not build advertising profiles. This policy explains exactly what we collect and why.
What Data We Collect
When you use KnowYard, we collect:
- Email address — provided during signup via Clerk, used for account recovery and essential notifications
- Username — your chosen display identity on the platform
- Profile information — optional display name, bio, and any other information you choose to add to your profile
- Posts, comments, and votes — the content you create and your interactions with other content
- Search queries — used to improve search results, not tied to your identity for ad targeting
How Your Data Is Stored
Your data is stored across two services:
- Supabase — PostgreSQL database for posts, comments, votes, profiles, and all platform content. Protected by row-level security policies.
- Clerk — authentication provider that handles your email, password, and session management. Clerk's infrastructure is SOC 2 Type II compliant.
Cookies
We use minimal cookies. Specifically:
- Clerk session cookie — keeps you signed in
- Theme preference — remembers your light/dark mode choice
We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising pixels.
Analytics
We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly analytics tool. Plausible does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, and does not track individual users across sites. All analytics data is aggregated and anonymous. No data is sent to Google or any advertising network.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties. Period. Your data is only shared with the infrastructure providers listed above (Supabase and Clerk) as necessary to operate the platform.
We may disclose data if required by law, such as a valid court order or subpoena.
Data Retention
Your account data is retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete individual posts or comments, they are removed from the database. Deleted content may persist in backups for up to 30 days before being permanently purged.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Delete your account — removes your profile, email, and personal data from our systems
- Request a data export — receive a copy of all data associated with your account
- Correct your information — update your profile, username, or email at any time through your account settings
To request account deletion or a data export, email us at support@knowyard.com or use the account settings page.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will notify users via an in-app notification and update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
