wrestling for BJJ — why every grappler should add wrestling to their training

if you train BJJ and you dont cross-train wrestling you are leaving a massive hole in your game. this is not an opinion. its a fact demonstrated at every major grappling competition.

the problem:

  • most BJJ gyms teach takedowns as an afterthought. 5 minutes of takedown practice before guard pulling drill
  • in nogi competition the best grapplers are the ones who can wrestle. ADCC champions consistently have strong wrestling
  • if you cant take someone down you are either pulling guard (fine in gi, risky in nogi) or you are losing the standup exchange and getting taken down yourself

what wrestling adds to your BJJ:

  • takedowns: singles, doubles, duck-unders, snap-downs. actual RELIABLE ways to get the fight to the ground
  • scrambling ability: wrestling teaches you to move explosively in chaotic positions. this translates directly to BJJ scrambles
  • top pressure: wrestling top position is heavy and controlling. add this to your BJJ passing and you become a nightmare
  • conditioning: wrestling practice will get you in the best shape of your grappling career
  • mental toughness: wrestling is uncomfortable and exhausting. training it makes everything else feel easier

how to add wrestling if you train BJJ in DFW:

  1. find a gym that offers wrestling classes (many MMA gyms have them)
  2. commit to 1-2 wrestling sessions per week on top of your BJJ
  3. start with basic takedowns: double leg, single leg, arm drag to single
  4. focus on defense first — sprawling and front headlock defense will save you in competitions
  5. be humble. you will be bad at wrestling at first even if youre a purple belt in BJJ. different skill set

DFW gyms with wrestling for grapplers:

  • several MMA gyms offer wrestling classes that BJJ players are welcome to attend
  • some BJJ gyms are adding dedicated wrestling blocks to their schedule
  • ask your coach. if they dont offer wrestling, suggest it. the demand is there

the era of "just pull guard" is ending. learn to wrestle.

my BJJ coach finally added a wrestling class last year after half the team begged for it. attendance is through the roof. every BJJ gym in DFW should have at least one wrestling class on the schedule

the double leg is the most important technique any BJJ player can learn from wrestling. a reliable double leg gives you the option to take the fight to the ground on YOUR terms in any competition

the scrambling ability from wrestling is the biggest transfer for me. in BJJ when a pass fails or a sweep gets countered, the person who can scramble better wins the exchange. wrestlers are ELITE scramblers

started wrestling 2x/week 6 months ago as a BJJ purple belt. my competition results improved immediately. i went from getting taken down and playing guard every match to actually choosing where the fight goes. game changer

wrestling 2x/week absolutely destroyed my body for the first month. the pace is so much more intense than BJJ. but after my body adapted my cardio and toughness went through the roof
