Ilia Topuria knocked out Alexander Volkanovski to win the featherweight title and the MMA world lost its collective mind. But let us look at this objectively.
The case for megastar:
- 16-0 professional record. Undefeated with 12 finishes. Source: Sherdog.
- KO power at 145 that we have not seen since McGregor's run.
- The Volkanovski knockout was clean and decisive. No controversy.
- Only 27 years old. A decade of prime fighting ahead of him.
- Charismatic, multilingual (speaks Georgian, Spanish, German, English). Global appeal that transcends markets.
The case for overhyped:
- Resume before Volkanovski was thin. Bryce Mitchell and Josh Emmett are not top-tier wins.
- Featherweight is deep. Max Holloway, Yair Rodriguez, Movsar Evloev, and Diego Lopes are all waiting.
- One knockout does not make a dynasty. Conor knocked out Aldo in 13 seconds and never defended at 145.
The key question: Can he defend the belt multiple times? The difference between flash-in-the-pan and all-time great is sustained dominance.
My take: The talent is real. The power is real. But call him a megastar after 3 defenses, not 1 title win.
