Stars vs. Wild: The Central Division rivalry that keeps getting more intense

While Colorado gets the historical rivalry spotlight, the Dallas Stars vs. Minnesota Wild rivalry has quietly become one of the most competitive matchups in hockey.

Recent playoff history: The Stars and Wild have met in the playoffs 3 times since 2016. Each series has gone 6 games or more. The physical play and intensity in these series has been exceptional. Source: Hockey Reference playoff records.

Why this rivalry works:

  1. Geographic connection: The Stars were the Minnesota North Stars from 1967 to 1993. When the franchise relocated to Dallas, it created a permanent wound in Minnesota hockey culture. Wild fans view the Stars with particular animosity because of this history.

  2. Playing style clash: Minnesota plays a grinding, physical, structured game. Dallas plays a more skilled, speed-based game. The contrast in styles creates compelling hockey because both teams force the other out of their comfort zone.

  3. The fans: Minnesota is the state of hockey. Their fans are among the most knowledgeable in the NHL. Dallas fans have grown into a passionate, loyal base. When these fanbases meet -- whether at AAC or Xcel Energy Center -- the atmosphere is electric.

Head-to-head since 2015 (source: Hockey Reference):

  • Regular season: Stars lead 24-21-5
  • Playoffs: Stars lead 10-9 in games won

The margins are razor-thin. Neither team has dominated the other.

Key stat: The average score in Stars-Wild games over the past 3 seasons is 3.1 to 2.8. These are low-scoring, tight, physical games. If you like wide-open 6-5 shootouts, watch a different matchup. If you like gritty, intense hockey, this is the rivalry for you.

Wild fans at AAC are always respectful but intense. They travel well and they know the sport. It is the kind of rivalry where you can trash-talk and shake hands after the game.

Playoff series between these teams are always wars of attrition. 6+ game series, physical play, low-scoring games. It is old-school hockey and I love it.

The North Stars relocation history adds a layer to this rivalry that no other matchup in hockey has. Minnesota fans genuinely resent Dallas for taking their team. That resentment fuels every game.
