DFW pet emergency preparedness: Storms, heat, and disasters

DFW weather is unpredictable. Here's how to keep your pets safe.

Severe storms/tornadoes:

  • Keep a pet emergency kit: 3 days of food, water, medications, copies of vet records, leash, carrier
  • Know your tornado shelter spot and practice getting your pet there quickly
  • Microchip + collar with current tags. Storms separate pets from owners more than anything.

Texas heat (June-September):

  • NEVER leave pets in cars. Interior temps reach 120F+ in 10 minutes. It's illegal in Texas. Source: Texas Penal Code 42.092.
  • Walk on grass, not pavement. Asphalt reaches 150F+ on 100-degree days.
  • Provide shade and fresh water 24/7 for outdoor pets.
  • Signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, collapse. Go to emergency vet IMMEDIATELY.

Winter storms (rare but devastating — remember 2021):

  • Keep pets inside during freezing weather. Period.
  • Stock 5-7 days of pet food and water (pipes freeze).
  • Antifreeze is toxic and attractive to pets. Clean any spills immediately.

If you evacuate:

  • Many DFW shelters do NOT accept pets during evacuations. Plan ahead.
  • Pet-friendly hotels in DFW: La Quinta, Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, many others. Source: BringFido.com
  • Never leave pets behind. If it's not safe for you, it's not safe for them.

Emergency vet contacts:

  • DFW Animal Emergency & Referral: (972) 994-9110
  • BluePearl Dallas: (972) 994-9110
  • ASPCA Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 (24/7, $95 consultation fee)
