DFW has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to movie theaters. After seeing 100+ movies across the metroplex, here is the definitive ranking.
S Tier (worth driving across the metroplex):
-
Alamo Drafthouse (Richardson, Las Colinas, Lake Highlands) — The best overall movie experience in DFW. No phones, no talking, enforced by staff. Full menu served to your seat. Pre-show curated content instead of ads. The Richardson location is the flagship.
-
Look Cinemas (Dallas, Addison) — Premium screens, luxury recliners, excellent sound. The bar and restaurant are legit standalone quality. The Dallas location on Northwest Highway is gorgeous.
-
AMC IMAX (NorthPark, Grapevine, Stonebriar) — For event movies, IMAX is still king. The NorthPark AMC IMAX screen is the largest in DFW. If you are seeing a Nolan or Marvel movie, this is where you go.
A Tier (excellent):
-
Cinemark XD (Plano, West Plano, Arlington) — Great value. XD screens rival IMAX at a lower price. The West Plano location was recently renovated.
-
Studio Movie Grill (multiple DFW) — Full dinner service, recliners, solid screens. More affordable than Alamo. The Plano and Arlington locations are the best.
-
Flix Brewhouse (Little Elm, Mansfield) — Brewery attached to a theater. The beer selection is excellent and brewed on-site.
B Tier (solid value):
-
Cinemark (standard locations) — Reliable, affordable, everywhere. Tuesday discount days make this the budget king.
-
AMC (standard) — A-List subscription ($20-25/mo for 3 movies/week) makes this the best value if you go often.
The verdict: Alamo Drafthouse for the experience, AMC IMAX for spectacle, Cinemark for value.

AMC A-List pays for itself in two movies. I see 8-10 movies a month on it. Best subscription deal in entertainment right now.
