DFW library systems: More than just books

DFW libraries are criminally underused. Here's everything they offer.

Dallas Public Library:

  • 29 locations across Dallas. Source: dallaslibrary.org
  • Free: Books, ebooks (Libby app), audiobooks, DVDs, magazines, newspapers
  • Free: WiFi, computer access, printing (limited pages)
  • Free: Museum passes — check out passes to the Perot, Dallas Zoo, Nasher, and more
  • Free: Lynda.com/LinkedIn Learning access with library card
  • Free: Tax preparation assistance (February-April)
  • Free: Notary services at some locations
  • Library card: free for Dallas County residents

Fort Worth Public Library:

  • 17 locations. Source: fortworthlibrary.org
  • Similar offerings plus Kanopy (free streaming service) and Hoopla (movies, music, ebooks)
  • Free: 3D printing at select locations
  • Free: Recording studio at Riverside branch

Plano Public Library:

  • 4 locations. Consistently rated one of the best library systems in TX. Source: plano.gov/library
  • Makerspace with 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines
  • Free: Notary, passport services, tech help

What most people don't know:

  • Libby app — free ebooks and audiobooks. Unlimited. Just need your library card number. Source: libbyapp.com
  • Museum passes — Dallas Public Library lets you check out FREE admission passes to major museums. First come, first served.
  • LinkedIn Learning — full access with most DFW library cards. That's a $30/month value.
  • Meeting rooms — free to reserve at most branches. Great for study groups or small meetings.

How to get a card:

  • Walk in with a photo ID and proof of address. Takes 5 minutes. Free.
