Most DFW renters have no idea Texas law may require your apartment locks to be rekeyed between tenants

Most people think apartment security is just whatever the complex decides to give you. In Texas, that is not fully true. State law generally requires baseline security devices in residential rentals, including window latches on exterior windows, locks or deadbolts on exterior doors, protection for exterior sliding glass doors, and in many cases a keyless interior bolting device and door viewer. The wild part: landlords are also generally required to change or rekey locks between tenancies. That means if you moved into a unit and never thought about who might still have an old key, Texas law already treats that as a real security issue, not just paranoia. [web:17]

If your unit is missing those basics, this is not just bad property management. It can be a compliance problem. Check your front door, back or patio door, and every exterior-facing window, because a lot of renters never realize they should be looking for specific required devices instead of assuming the complex handled everything correctly.
