Gunshots or fireworks? How to tell the difference and when to call 911

This question comes up constantly in DFW neighborhood groups, especially around holidays. Here's how to tell.

Sound differences:

  • Gunshots: Sharp, short, consistent volume. Rapid succession if semi-auto. Single loud crack if shotgun/rifle. No echo pattern — just a flat "pop" or "crack."
  • Fireworks: Variable volume, often with a whistle or hiss before the bang. Longer duration per event. Crackle/sizzle after the boom. Multiple different sounds in sequence.

Pattern differences:

  • Gunshots: Usually 1-8 rapid-fire shots, then silence. May be followed by tire screeching or yelling.
  • Fireworks: Prolonged display lasting minutes. Multiple types of explosions. Often visible in the sky.

When to call 911:

  • If you hear what sounds like gunshots, ALWAYS call. Let dispatch determine if it's fireworks.
  • If you hear screaming, glass breaking, or tire screeching with the sounds, call immediately.
  • You don't need to be certain. "I heard what sounded like gunshots" is enough.

ShotSpotter coverage: DPD has ShotSpotter acoustic sensors in parts of South Dallas, Pleasant Grove, and Oak Cliff. These automatically detect and locate gunfire and alert police. You should still call 911 — ShotSpotter doesn't cover all areas.

  • ATF — acoustic signature differences (gunshot identification training materials)

When in doubt, call. Dispatchers would rather get 10 fireworks calls than miss one shooting.
