Oleksandr Usyk: The undisputed heavyweight champion and what it means for boxing history

Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion in 2024. He is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. The significance cannot be overstated.

The achievement (Source: BoxRec, Ring Magazine):

  • Undisputed at cruiserweight (200 lbs) AND heavyweight (unlimited). The only fighter in the four-belt era to achieve this in two weight classes.
  • Professional record: 22-0 (14 KOs)
  • Moved from 200 to heavyweight and beat the biggest, most physically imposing champions in the division
  • Defeated Anthony Joshua twice, then Tyson Fury

Why Usyk is historically special:

  1. Size disadvantage. Usyk fights at approximately 220-225 lbs in a division where his opponents weigh 245-275 lbs. He gives up 30-50 pounds every fight and still wins.
  2. Technical mastery. His footwork, angles, and combination punching are the best in heavyweight boxing. He fights like a middleweight in a heavyweight's ring.
  3. Southpaw brilliance. Left-handed fighters are historically difficult to prepare for. Usyk's southpaw stance combined with his footwork creates angles that heavyweights cannot handle.

The Fury fight: Fury was the betting favorite and the bigger man. Usyk outboxed him over 12 rounds, hurt him badly in the middle rounds, and won by split decision. The rematch confirmed the result.

Historical ranking: Usyk's resume and achievements place him in the conversation for top-10 heavyweight of all time. Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, and Larry Holmes are the appropriate comparisons -- brilliant technicians who overcame physical disadvantages.
